Grading odds

PSA has graded 929 copies. Where they landed:

PSA 1038141.0%
PSA 943046.3%
PSA 8.510.1%
PSA 8828.8%
PSA 7262.8%

Why the verdict weights the odds

Only 41.0% of copies reach a 10, which is why the top price is the wrong number to plan around. Weighting each grade’s PSA price by these odds, a submission is worth $1,328£999.49€1,170 on average against $673.75£507.10€593.35 for the card plus $149£112.14€131.22 at Express, the cheapest level PSA will insure it at. That clears $654.22£492.39€576.15, so grading a clean copy is worth the wait.

What moves the price of this card

The Charizard (Prerelease) [Staff] on this page is the Holofoil printing from Sword & Shield Promo Cards, and it trades at $637.88£480.10€561.76 in near mint condition. Only one printing of this card was produced, so there is no cheaper version to confuse it with.

Graded, it runs PSA 7 $188.79£142.09€166.26, PSA 9 $668.77£503.35€588.97, CGC/BGS 9.5 $1,323£995.37€1,165, PSA 10 $2,457£1,849€2,164. PSA has graded 929 copies of it. 672 completed sales are on file.

What is a PSA 10 Charizard (Prerelease) [Staff] worth?

A PSA 10 Charizard (Prerelease) [Staff] from Sword & Shield Promo Cards sells for $2,457. 42.2% of the copies PSA has graded came back a 10, so that price is the best case rather than the one a submission should expect.

Is Charizard (Prerelease) [Staff] from Sword & Shield Promo Cards worth grading?

On the numbers, yes. The average submission is worth $1,356 with every grade weighted by how often this card comes back at it, against $504.75 for a raw copy plus $169 to send it through PSA Express, so it clears $682.16.

Condition does most of the work below the surface. A copy with soft corners or a print line off centre trades well under the market price shown here, and a copy clean enough to grade trades well above it, which is why the PSA 10 sits at $2,457£1,849€2,164. Before you value your own copy, look at the corners under a light and check the centring on the back, where most cards give themselves away.
