Grading odds

PSA has graded 11,687 copies. Where they landed:

PSA 109,95185.1%
PSA 91,47412.6%
PSA 81901.6%
PSA 7410.4%
PSA 6160.1%
Lower150.1%

Why the verdict weights the odds

Only 85.1% of copies reach a 10, which is why the top price is the wrong number to plan around. Weighting each grade’s PSA price by these odds, a submission is worth $42.77£31.89€38.26 on average against $109.99£82.02€98.39 for the card plus $79.99£59.65€71.55 at Regular, the cheapest level PSA will insure it at. That loses $67.22£50.12€60.13, so a copy is worth more raw.

A PSA 10 Pikachu V-UNION (Top Right) from Japanese 25th Anniversary Collection sells for $46.93. 85.7% of the copies PSA has graded came back a 10, so that price is the best case rather than the one a submission should expect.

Is Pikachu V-UNION (Top Right) from Japanese 25th Anniversary Collection worth grading?

On the numbers, no. The average submission is worth $42.93 with every grade weighted by how often this card comes back at it, against $10 for a raw copy plus $99.99 to send it through PSA Regular, so it loses $67.06.

Condition does most of the work below the surface. A copy with soft corners or a print line off centre trades well under the market price shown here, and a copy clean enough to grade trades well above it, which is why the PSA 10 sits at $46.93£34.99€41.98. Before you value your own copy, look at the corners under a light and check the centring on the back, where most cards give themselves away.
